Originally established in 1974 by James
Saunders, our Crime Department is widely recognised as a leader in its
field, and is one of only three in England to be peer reviewed Excellence (1) by the Legal Services
Commission. Also highly ranked by “The Legal 500” and “Chambers Directory”.
We have a team of in-house higher and lower
courts advocates, but our most noted cases are perhaps jury trials and
appellate work. High profile cases handled by our partners and staff
include the murder appeal of Norfolk farmer Tony Martin; an infamous child
serial murder case; the Brinks Matt gold bullion robbery; London Israeli
embassy bombing: ABC official secrets act trial; the Park Lane
assassination attempt that started a Middle East war; a $1bn cocaine
shipment; Irish terrorism cases for both Republicans and Loyalists;
Operation Julie – the LSD factory that supplied one third of the world; The
Wickes Plc Serious Fraud Office prosecution is a prominent example of our
fraud practice.
We are known for our meticulous preparation,
technical skills and fearless commitment, our command of the law, jury
trial technique, and in depth knowledge of forensic science and medicine.
We are logistically resourced to deal with the very largest cases, which
can involve literally tonnes of paper, 55Gb of disclosure and trials
lasting more than a year.
We are renowned for taking cases on appeal to
the Court of Appeal, House of Lords, and European Court of Justice, or by
way of Judicial Review to the High Court, creating legal precedents in DNA
profiling, asset forfeiture, extradition, bail and sexual offences.
In asset forfeiture, we
have vast experience of confiscation orders under the Proceeds of Crime
Act, and Civil Recovery cases. We have an Extradition practice, experienced
up to the House of Lords, and a dedicated motoring cases unit.
We are able to handle criminal defence on legal
aid where appropriate.
