Saunders Law is on the lookout for an exceptional individual to join us as our Business Development Manager.

The firm is open-minded about the engagement: it may suit a successful consultant, or this could be an employed or retained role.  Remuneration based on salary or success with a fee-share, is also possible.

Salary: Market Rate based on type of role.

Hours: Initially 2 to 3 days a week.

This is a new role for the business and we are seeking an individual who has entrepreneurial spirit and agility, who is ambitious, smart, and curious.

This role provides plenty of room for growth and creativity as we are a successful and expanding firm, and this role will focus on providing further growth and expansion.

This role will give the successful candidate substantial responsibility for shaping and driving the business development and marketing strategy for the practice, along with executing highly effective marketing campaigns, optimising our client focus strategy, cross-selling the practice within the firm and much more.

The Role: 

This role will be working with our commercial litigation/dispute resolution teams, who include experts in commercial litigation, fraud and regulatory litigation, white collar crime and professional discipline, media, intellectual property and trademark – as well as commercial media law.   The firm is also one of the most high-profile human rights and public law practices – but this role with have light touch involvement with these teams.

We are seeking an experienced BD Manager or Senior BD Executive, who must have demonstrable experience of winning and driving business in a dispute resolution/litigation practice.

We need an entrepreneurial individual, who will hit the ground running and assist the firm’s partners and management in winning new business.

The person in the BD role will have the remit to ‘get creative’ and think big with a brief to develop and implement marketing campaigns to promote and generate revenue opportunities for key practices in the business; help improve pitching and internal referral generation; and of course maintain on-going needs with speed and efficiency including Directory support, on-going events activity and social digital awareness.

This role would suit a dynamic, astute and enthusiastic marketer, who is seeking to have a real impact in an agile and entrepreneurial environment.


This is a critical role for enabling the business to move forward and there are a number of significant projects and programmes anticipated with the aim of further enhancing the department’s profile and ensuring we are seen as a leading specialist.

  • You must be prepared to get out there, target and locate potential clients and win business
  • Devise and implement BD plans for the businesses practice areas and assist with driving those strategic business development initiatives in line with business goals.
  • Identify and take forward initiatives and campaigns to help grow our profile within our chosen markets.
  • Undertake budget management including an assessment of the cost vs benefit of all BD activity to ensure that resources are used in an efficient and effective manner.
  • Act as the main point of contact for pitches and bids advising on the recommended route for responding to formal and informal opportunities and managing the process from start to execution.
  • Evaluate the commercial viability of bid opportunities and make justified recommendations as to whether or not opportunities should be pursued.
  • Support fee earners to develop lead generation activity and identify, target and prioritise prospects.
  • Work with the firm’s Partners and lawyers to ensure case studies are being completed.
  • Develop an in-depth knowledge of and contribute to the implementation of a plan to target the firm’s key clients. Identify which are the most appropriate clients for cross-selling opportunities.
  • Look for opportunities to proactively raise the profile of the Department whether through partnering with external organisations or by engaging in firm-wide initiatives.
  • Manage the annual legal directories process, working with Partners and a specialist Directories consultant (who runs the day-to-day process) to maximise Legal 500 and Chambers submissions, including the referee and interview process.
  • Report to the Management Team against firmwide KPIS on BD activity across pitching, conversion ratios, client feedback, cross selling, client growth etc.
  • Drive and implement improvements in the firm’s pitching and credentials effectiveness and production.

Person Specification

We are looking for an experienced Business Development person, ideally with at least 5 years’ experience in a business development role within a Dispute Resolution and professional services environment.

The successful candidate will possess many of the following qualifications and attributes:

  • Demonstrable experience, with a portfolio, of driving business, clients and matters to a dispute resolution practice
  • An evident entrepreneur and a confident leader and strategic thinker, demonstrating credibility and influence among senior stakeholders.
  • Exuding passion - approaches all tasks in an enthusiastic way. Committed to upholding professional standards.
  • A creative thinker and able to demonstrate this via excellent writing style, development of campaign ideas and in thinking laterally.
  • A first-class communicator, both written and verbal.
  • Commercially aware, sensitive to the concerns and needs of internal and external clients.
  • Highly team-orientated and a strong personal touch.
  • Entrepreneurial - able to deal with multiple priorities and urgent situations.
  • Able to work autonomously and to a deadline.
  • Good at sharing skills & knowledge; familiarity with the latest thinking in BD including the use of social media.
  • Excellent project management skills with a track record of leading and developing high performance teams and seeing projects through to completion.
  • Tenacious approach to delivery, quality of output and organisation.
  • The ability to work well with staff at all levels.
  • Ability to operate under pressure to resolve issues in a controlled and calm fashion.
