James Saunders quoted on BBC News – ‘Lawyer Jenny Holt’s laundering conviction overturned’

19th February 2014

A Manx advocate who acted for a businessman convicted of money laundering has cleared her name of similar charges.

Jenny Holt was part of the defence team representing Trevor Baines during a trial in 2009.

The 34-year-old was found guilty in 2011 of money laundering and falsifying documents at Douglas courthouse.

The Judicial Committee of the Privy Council has now quashed all convictions.

Miss Holt was arrested in 2009 when it emerged that that legal fees sent to her then employers had been stolen by Mr Baines and his wife Wendy.

Miss Holt, who denied all charges, was given a suspended jail sentence.

Following an appeal, a decision has been made by the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council, the island's highest Court of Appeal, to quash all convictions.

Her solicitor James Saunders said the decision will "give her back her good character and career".

He said: "I never doubted her innocence from first meeting Jenny, and after her four-year nightmare it is wonderful to see justice prevail."
