Ruth Mellor

Representing those seeking justice following misconduct by the police and other state authorities, and supporting families through inquests.

Ruth is a Solicitor in the Civil Liberties department, having joined Saunders Law in March 2016. Her work carries a focus on matters involving police misconduct and deaths in custody. She also advises on claims against other state authorities, such as prisons, and healthcare providers.

She has achieved successful outcomes both in obtaining compensation for clients, and through the complaints process where clients felt that officers should face disciplinary action.  This includes advising on claims in false imprisonment, assault, malicious prosecution, discrimination, and under the Human Rights Act 1998, as well as in related Judicial Review proceedings.

She has a background in acting for clients who have sustained complex and serious physical and psychiatric injuries, whether as a result of assault or clinical negligence. She is equipped to advise where an individual’s ability to continue work has been affected, and where future care or treatment will be required.

Ruth regularly represents family members in inquests arising from deaths in custody, such as in prison or following police contact. She also has experience in acting where there have been failures of local authority bodies, such as social services and mental health trusts. This can entail advising on any resulting civil claims for damages. She appreciates that these processes are incredibly difficult and personal for bereaved families, and so she adapts how she works to each family’s needs.

Ruth also assists Nia Williams on the Undercover Policing Inquiry and the claims arising from the Hillsborough disaster.

Before joining Saunders Law, Ruth completed her training contract at Bindmans LLP, where she trained in Police Actions and Civil Liberties, Inquests, Personal Injury and Clinical Negligence. Prior to this, Ruth was a paralegal at Fisher Meredith, where she specialised in education law, advising on special educational needs and disability discrimination. Ruth has a BA (Hons) in Law and German from the University of Nottingham, which involved a year studying law at the Leibniz University in Hannover, Germany. While a paralegal, she gained a distinction in the LPC at the College of Law. She has volunteered in various roles for Liberty, Interrights, Prisoners Abroad, and the University of East London’s Law Clinic.
